How 3D TV Technology Works

How 3D TV Technology Works

3D television technology is becoming increasingly popular with each passing day. Due to the rise of popular 3D feature films (namely Pixar's Up and James Cameron's Avatar), major television manufacturers began developing three dimensional home television technology in 2009.

There are several methods that these manufacturers use to create 3D images on an LCD television; some are more expensive than others, and some are more feasible than others. This article will discuss the three primary methods of 3-D home theater technology that will be used in upcoming years.

How 3D TV Technology Works

Lenticular viewing: This technology has been pioneered by Philips, and is available as of today. TV sets that use this technology can be watched without those funny glasses that audiences used in theaters. These televisions use a lens that can send different images to each eye. That is, your left eye will see a completely different image from your right eye, which will emulate your two eyes' use of stereopsis (the process by which your eyes discern depth). The one weakness of lenticular viewing, however, is that a viewer must sit in a very specific spot in front of the TV. This means that only a couple people would be able to comfortably watch the TV at once due to its small viewing angle.

Passive glass systems: Hyundai is developing this type of LCD monitor which will allow both 2D and 3D images to be viewed. To watch the 3-D images, viewers will need to wear the traditional glasses in order to watch three dinemsional media. This technology is nothing new: the TV has two overlapping images and the glasses have polarized lenses. Each lens is polarized so that it can see only one of the two overlapping images. This technology is very feasible and 40 to 50 inch LCD TVs with this technology are currently available for purchase.

Active glass systems: This system is very similar to the passive glass system, except rather than the TV doing all work, the glasses do. The glasses synchronize with the refresh rate of the TV, then they alternate the polarization of each lens, making the wearers of the glasses see 3-D images. With this technology, people could be watching a 2-D movie comfortably, then at will switch the movie into 3-D. This type of monitor is being developed by Samsung and Mitsubishi, but the downside is that the glasses could be very expensive. Some predict the glasses to be upwards of 0.

3D glasses works on the principle of stereoscopic view. Stereoscopic is the kind of view, where a separated image was captured by each eye distanced 2 inches apart respectively, and our brain interpret both images and analyze the depth distance, before combining into a single 3D image. This is also the reason why, we can't walk properly with an eye closed, because we're not able to calculate the distance in front of us!

There're various kind of 3D glasses available today, but classical 3D glasses are red-cyan glasses which works on color filtration, and polarized glasses which works on light-polarization. If you look closely to this polarized glass, one lens is vertically split while the other is horizontally.

Polarized 3D glasses

**Board Image**

In 3D cinema providing you this red-cyan glasses, the screen was projected by 2 different sources. One projecting the movie in red color, while the other one projecting in cyan color, slightly displaced from the first one. The reason 3D glasses was red-cyan is because each lens functions to Filter their own color, allowing 1 image entering just one eye. Hence our left eye sees the image projected by red Projector, while right eye sees the image from cyan Projector which slightly displaced, creating illusion that the movie is in 3D. However the quality of the movie isn't fAir enough since we Filtered off some colors here.

With polarized glasses, 2 projectors were used too, to provide 2 images which is plane-polarized perpendicular to each other. Polarized lens works the same way as red-cyan lens do, to Filter off 1 image and allowing the other entering your eye. By combining 2 images slightly displaced from each other, we see a movie with 3D depth!

The working principle of these glasses is very simple, and you can even make your own 3D spectacles by making your own polarized lens, simply by making thin lines horizontally and vertically across the lens!

I couldn't wait to pop this out of the box and have a look. It is gorgeous and the 55 inch screen is just the right size to fully immerse yourself into a Blu Ray movie and especially a 3D movie.

LG 47G2 47 LCD HDTV 3D Glasses

All my other LG's have been 47 inches and this is my first 55 inch screen. It really is impressive to see it in action. The brushed aluminum bezel and faux metal stand finish matches perfectly. It really does look cushty!

The screen is semi glossy but not a mirror like a Plasma can be. I watch in a semi darkened room and it looks fantastic. The speakers are above average for a flat panel. Honestly though, if you spend this much on a TV I would hope you are planning to use at least a sound-bar and sub. But as it is the sound produced by the G2 is more than fine for everyday viewing.
